A New Kind of Man: Representation of Women in Ousmane Sembene's Works
Abstract
This article explores the egalitarian ideology of the Ousmane Sembene’s films and fiction expressed through specific female characters. Specifically, it shows how Sembene presents these female characters as representative of the oppressed individuals of any given society. The works of Cheikh Anta Diop and Frantz Fanon provide the framework for understanding how these female characters liberate themselves from oppressive social structures through creating new egalitarian societies in the process.
