Abstract

Mariama Bdid not attack tradition and custom blatantly, but she expressed her disapproval of certain glaring abuses of tradition, which impede progress. While she demonstrated an unflinching faith in the freedom of choice and the personal nature of marriage and romantic love, she also expressed her belief in the gain that the community in the modern context - the nation- would reap from the success and the attainment of happiness by individual couples. For her, family success depended on the founding couple, and in turn, it was the grouping of all these successful and happy families that would constitute the Nation.
