Colonial Repression In The Gambia During World War II

Abstract

This article examines the causes for the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus in colonial Gambia during World War II. It does so against the background of what is obtained in some other parts of the world during similar states of emergency. It highlights the repressive nature in which the Governor of The Gambia applies harsh colonial force on innocent Africans, on a matter that clearly does not concern them and compelled them to put up with colonial rule. The article discusses the subjugation and inestimable anguish that Gambians were unjustifiably exposed to during World War II.
