Rethinking Adedibu: Politics, Patronage, and The 'Big Man'
Ebenezer Obadare
Abstract
The career of late chief Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu is used as a point of departure for a sociology of African politics. By situating Adedibu within mutually reinforcing “local†and “national†currents, two resonant themes in African politics are apprehended: the emergence and continued relevance of “big men†in the political process; and the sociocultural and material conditions that ensure their tenacity.
Keywords
Adedibu; African Politics; Neopatrimonialism; Ibadan; ‘big man’
