Brillian Besi Muhonja is Assistant Professor of Africana Studies, Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures and Women’s Studies at James Madison University, Virginia, USA; her research areas include Gender Studies/Feminist Theory, African and African American Feminisms, African Film and Theater, and East African Cultures. She holds a PhD in Philosophy, Interpretation and Culture, a Masters degree in Theater, and a Graduate Certificate in Feminist Theory. A significant amount of her research is geared towards the development of innovative multimedia approaches to telling the stories of Africana women with specific interest in theater and film. She has published on African theater and has also worked in various capacities including producer and production manager on over 30 TV and film productions. In the theater, she has served in various technical and creative positions including playwright, director and dramaturge in tens of productions in Kenya and the United States of America. Her published play Ogu Ndem: Aggressive Silence has been produced at Binghamton University, New York. She continues to serve as a creative and production consultant for organizations in East Africa and the USA.

Abstract

The question of legal abortion is becoming more salient in East African politics and scholarship. In Kenya in 2010, this issue threatened to derail the process to establish a new constitution, which was supported by a clear majority of the country’s citizens. This play engages this subject through the dramatic medium.
