My Mother: Childhood and Navigating Shared Marital Space

Milton Obote Joshua

Abstract

This memoir is a reflection of the construction of a woman, my mother as she grows up, becoming a mother and confronting the depths of insidious scheme of socialization designed to enforce women’s unquestioning submission to culturally sanctioned excesses of patriarchal privilege. The true value of this reflection lies in its exposure of the challenges she faced as she resiliently acted to break through and away from the scripted role which inhibited, at every stage of her life, the space for choice, free voice and self-worth. It highlights the sense of dignity with which she chose to resiliently pursue the path of freedom and establish her worth as a woman a mother with a clear motherly vision.
