Memoirs of Motherhood: Reflections on Pedagogical Motherhood in Community

Tushabe wa Tushabe

Abstract

This paper reflects on motherhood as pedagogy and suggests that motherhood in Bakiga of southwestern Uganda goes beyond biological capacity to reproduce. As a communal undertaking in the face of colonialism, from an indigenous perspective mothers can be seen as models of decolonization. My own memories of my mother’s motherhood as practiced in Bakiga offer a decolonial lens for reading motherhood in different cultures.
