As the shocking story of race, class, gender, and sexuality unfolded, we witnessed an intense media campaign to discredit Ms. Diallo by dredging up all manner of attacks that exploited racial, class, gender, and sexual stereotypes. To salvage the integrity of the powerful alleged rapist, the credibility of the poor lowly immigrant victim must be destroyed. The alleged rapist claims the sex is consensual, raising the question of what it really means for one of the world's most powerful men to claim to have consensual sex with a hotel maid?
