Cuba's Internationalism and Marti's "Trenches of Ideas"

Susan E. Babbitt

Abstract

In his Cuba: A New History, Richard Gott writes that by 1968 the Cuban revolution was intellectually bankrupt. Yet Cuba nonetheless sent troops to Angola in 1975 which, according to Gott, was entirely without selfish motivation. Theres a contradiction between Gotts statements that Cuba was intellectually bankrupt and that Cubas long and costly involvement in Angola was selfless. The latter requires explanation and I argue that JosMartprovides resources. Cuba was not in fact intellectually bankrupt.
